Reformer Pilates Basics

Pilates is a method of exercise that consists of low-impact flexibility and muscular strength and endurance movements. Pilates emphasises proper postural alignment, core strength and muscle balance, and there’s a much lower chance of injury than in other exercises.

It’s great for people with certain medical conditions and for beginners and people coming back from injury. Pilates is named for its creator, Joseph Pilates, who developed the exercises in the 1920s.

At East of Eden, we have a range of Pilates classes and teachers to suit all levels with a dedicated reformer Pilates studio. The reformer machine looks like a bed, with springs, a sliding carriage, ropes and pulleys, and is very versatile, offering support to beginners and people coming back from injury, however it can also be a challenging and intense workout.

We advise starting with the Basics classes if you are new to the reformer or coming back to fitness after an injury. These classes are slower in pace, with lots of support and encouragement. Once you have done a Basics class and are familiar with the reformer machine, if you feel ready for a greater challenge, please feel free to join one of our Open Level classes.
